Male anatomy: get the low-down

There are lots of names for male private parts, testicles are often called balls or nuts. It can be helpful to learn the correct names too, so you understand about your body and can look after your health better.

Men can be very self-conscious about their penis size, and just like a woman’s parts, men too come in all sizes.

We talk a lot about body positivity and this includes guys too.

Penis/shaft

The interior of the penis is made up of two different types of tissue, nerves and blood vessels. Blood can flow through the tissue in the penis and fill it up, similar to a sponge. When this happens the penis becomes stiff, this is called an erection.

Glans/head of penis

The glans is the bulbous part at the tip of the penis. It’s often more sensitive than the shaft (the long part) of the penis. In the glans is the opening to the urethra, the tube through which urine and semen both come out.

Foreskin

Foreskin covers the glans when his penis isn’t erect and gets pulled back when it is. Some people have their foreskin surgically removed for religious or health reasons, This is called circumcision.

Scrotum/Testicles

Sperm is made in the testicles, which live in the sack-like structure called the scrotum. Sperm then travels up an internal tube called the vas deferens and into the seminal vesicle (where some of the other components of semen are made).

The scrotum and surrounding areas are usually covered with pubic hair. Some people chose to shave or manscape others leave their hair, this is a personal choice for each person.

Prostate

When the sperm gets to the seminal vesicle, it proceeds through the prostate where it mixes with other ingredients that make it into semen. Semen is made up of sperm, sugar, mucous, vitamins, and protein. The purpose of the semen is to protect the sperm.
